Bosun ("we," "us," or "our") operates the Bosun mobile application and the website at bosunapp.ai. We are the data controller responsible for your personal information.
We take privacy seriously. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and what your rights are. We do not sell your personal data — ever.
What Data We Collect
Information you give us directly:
- Email address — when you join our waitlist or create an account
- Vessel information — vessel name, type, and details you enter in the app
- Uploaded documents — PDF manuals you upload for processing
- Maintenance records — tasks, engine hours, service logs you create in the app
Information collected automatically:
- Device information — device type, operating system version, unique device identifiers
- Usage data — features used, screens viewed, crash reports, and app performance data
- IP address — collected automatically when you access our website or services
Information we do NOT collect:
- Payment card details (handled entirely by Apple/Google at purchase)
- Precise GPS location
- Contacts, camera, or microphone data
How We Use Your Data
We use your data only for the following purposes:
- To provide the Service — processing your uploaded manuals, generating maintenance schedules, and syncing your data across devices
- To send launch and product updates — if you joined the waitlist, we'll email you when the app launches and with significant updates. You can unsubscribe at any time.
- To improve the Service — anonymous usage analytics help us understand which features are useful and fix problems
- To respond to your support requests — if you contact us, we use your information to help you
- To comply with legal obligations — where required by law
Third Parties
We work with a small number of trusted third-party services to operate Bosun. These are:
- Formspree — processes waitlist email submissions. Formspree Privacy Policy
- Apple App Store / Google Play — distribute the app and handle payments. Their privacy policies govern data collected during purchase.
- AI processing services — we use third-party AI APIs to read and interpret your uploaded PDFs. Documents are transmitted securely and are not stored or used by those services beyond the processing of your specific request.
- Crash reporting & analytics — anonymous crash and usage data may be processed by industry-standard tools (such as Firebase or similar) to help us fix bugs.
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party for marketing purposes.
Data Storage & Retention
Your data is stored on secure servers. We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service.
- Account data — retained until you delete your account
- Uploaded manuals — retained until you delete them or close your account
- Waitlist emails — retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion
- Crash & usage logs — retained for up to 90 days in anonymous form
When you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

If you believe we have not handled your data correctly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
California Residents (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you additional rights:
- Right to Know — you can request disclosure of what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell
- Right to Delete — you can request deletion of your personal information
- Right to Opt-Out of Sale — we do not sell your personal information, so this right is not applicable
- Right to Non-Discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising your CCPA rights

Children's Privacy
Bosun is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected data from a child, please contact us immediately at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.
Cookies
Our website (bosunapp.ai) uses minimal cookies. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies. The only cookies used are:
- Essential cookies — strictly necessary for the website to function (e.g. session state). These cannot be disabled.
We do not use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any third-party advertising trackers on our website. If this changes, we will update this policy and seek your consent where required.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email (if you have provided one) or via a notice in the app. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
